I took over as a new C-store owner from a friend in late 2010. On the very first day, to my surprise, I discovered all store operations were reconciled with a pencil and paper, which took half of the day.

Making matters worse, on the same day, two employees decided to quit as they noticed new faces reviewing the store operations; the jobber delivered fuel that was never ordered, and a tenant’s rent payment delivered to the store staff was missing.

Over the next few days, I noticed cashiers ringing items manually and setting item prices at their own discretion, vendors taking inventory orders based on a sales hunch, fuel prices not getting updated in alignment with market pricing, and cash differences at the time of reconciliation every day at a minimum exceeding twenty dollars.

Talking to other store owners in the community for best practices, it was clear they knew the business in the palm of their hands but lacked the tools to monitor and manage their businesses profitably. Tools that were available were cost-prohibitive and not easy to use for the store owner.

Something needed to be done to get my business under control. With that in mind, as a first step, I put a simple spreadsheet to standardize the shift operations. Within weeks, things were looking optimistic but were still manual. The business needed automation for the staff to take proactive measures. Hence, the birth of mercury|One in 2011 with the goal of computerizing and simplifying the manual spreadsheet. Since then, we didn’t look back.
